Principal's Update

It is already halfway through term 2 and the weather has changed with the onset of winter. The air is chilly and hopefully we will see some nice big cold fronts swing through over the next few weeks and dump plenty of snow in the Victorian alps ready for the Year 10/11 snow trip to be held early in term 3.
Please note Tuesday 11 June (the day after the Kings Birthday public holiday) is a Student Free Day. Staff will be engaged in our second full day of Restorative P ractices professional learning.
There were two occasions over the last week when I was an especially proud to be the Principal of this wonderful school. The first was the first nations Art Exhibition held on Friday 31 May and the second was the community tree planting even held on Sunday 2 June.
Reconciliation Week – First Nations Art Exhibition
I want to extend my appreciation and congratulations to Matt Ujhelyi (Aboriginal Education Teacher) and Lochie Buckskin (ASETO) for planning and holding the extremely successful first nations art exhibition in the DRMC on Friday 31 May. The art works completed by the students, under the instruction of local first nations artist, Scott Rathman, were incredible. Several paintings were sold on the day, which is testament to the quality of the pieces produced. Another highlight of the event was the launch of the Golden Grove High School Acknowledgement of Country video, featuring our own students, speaking a script written by Lochie. And a big thank you to Adrian Rusby and his team of FLO student baristas who kept us caffeinated throughout the event.
Community Restoration Connectivity Project
In 2023 the school was successful in winning a $5,000 grant, which will used to fund the Cobbler Creek to Dry Creek Habitat Restoration Connectivity Project. The focus areas for the mass planting are the bank along the side of the oval, under the tree canopy next to the disc golf course, and on the right-hand side of the driveway entrance to the school. It is hoped that the planting of the hundreds of bushes, shrubs and trees will encourage the return of the Superb Fairy-wren (fingers crosses) to the Golden Grove area.
The community tree planting kicked off on Sunday 2 June with the first plants (about 150) going into the ground. We had a team of 20 volunteers help on the day – a mix of staff, parents, students, and children. It was fantastic working together as a team to carry out this important work. A massive shout out to the Environmental Action Team headed up by Laura and her fantastic team of supporters - Darcy, Kirsty, Leanne, Wayne, Adam, and Belle. And big thanks to Leanne for cooking the bacon and egg barbeque breakfast we all enjoyed. A special shout out to Melissa Applegate, who was one of the key authors of the successful $5,000 grant application, for turning up on Sunday to give her assistance to the planting team. Her support for the event was deeply appreciated.
The main planting day for students is Tuesday 4 June to tie in with World Environment Day but we also have:
- All year 12 Groves planting during ID on Monday 3 June,
- and a couple of other year levels planting later in the week.
Staff Updates
After Natasha Dunn’s success winning the Principal position at Clare High School, the school decided not to backfill her Assistant Principal role. Instead, we advertised for a SACE Operations and Improvement leader for the remainder of 2024, and it is my pleasure to announce Liam Davis was the successful applicant. This means we now need to backfill behind Liam and find a male Wellbeing leader, also for the rest of this year.
In other staff news:
- Anna Dunn (Discovery Centre and Special Options Leader) is about to begin maternity leave and will be replaced by Cherie Dawkins (currently the Disability Unit leader at Salisbury High School).
- Kirsty Faulkner (Year 7 Sub School Leader) is about to begin maternity leave and will be replaced by Ben Wilson.
- Sam Boocock has won the Year 9 Sub School Leader role for the remainder of the year (behind Rob Yeend who is backfilling the Assistant Principal: Student Wellbeing role for Kristy Power who is also on materity leave).
- Xavia Zubrinich is the acting VET / Student Pathways leader, behind Shane Matei, who is currently on long service leave.
Golden Grove High School Disc Golf Course
It is my pleasure to announce the Golden Grove High School Disc Golf Course is officially open and ready for community use out of school hours. I love the game and have been sharing my passion for the sport with a group of 8-10 students who formed the lunchtime disc golf club about 18 months ago. Once a term we go on an excursion and play a course around Adelaide, but it is nice to have our own course on our school grounds. It is currently 9 holes, with plans for a further 9 holes to be added by the end of this year. For those of you who would like to have a go at this great game, keep an eye out for the upcoming Come N Try event to be held on a Sunday later this term. We will provide all the equipment you need to get you started. You can learn to play the game in minutes, but you could keep learning more about the various techniques for the rest of your life (if you wanted to!). I look forward to seeing you on the course.
Parent Concerns School Contact
There are times when things go wrong, and you will want to raise a concern with the school. It is best if concerns can be raised and followed up in a timely manner at the school level, but often you may not be sure who to raise the concern with. We have created a dedicated email address (dl.1834.parentconcerns@schools.sa.edu.au) to support families to let us know what your concerns are. The email will be actively monitored by Belinda Noack (Wellbeing Leader). She will triage your concern and connect you with the person in the school who can respond most appropriately. You can expect to be contacted by the person who will be responding to your concern within 2 working days.

Linda DeBoer – Career Strategy Manager
I am thrilled to move into the Careers arena at GGHS this year and work within the Careers Team. With a deep passion for career development in young people, I believe it's crucial to equip them with the skills to navigate their own career journey, both now and in the future. The Department of Education has significantly increased resources for careers over the past few years, providing fantastic support that will greatly benefit our students. I love coming to work and discussing 'careers' with our students!
A Bit About Me
Family: I'm married to a Canadian, who is also in education, and we have three adult children—two living interstate and one in Adelaide.
Education/Work: I completed my secondary education in Australia and went on to study an Accounting course in Canada and then later, Career Development in Australia. In addition, I have worked in domestic and commercial banking in Australia and Canada; and in the leisure/fitness industry and a few other industries short term while travelling.
Interests and Hobbies: I enjoy walking and training my dog, camping, growing organic veggies and herbs, traveling, reading, visiting art exhibitions, and spending lots of time with my family.
Favourite Drink: There aren't many drinks I don't like, but a stout is my go-to when I want to relax J
Favourite Books: Some of my favourites include "Book Thief," "Pearl Thief," and the "Bourne Series." I love reading, though, I must admit, Netflix can sometimes get in the way!
Favourite Movies: I'm drawn to films about the CIA, MI5, spies, and WW2, especially those highlighting the bravery of resistance fighters in the war. Love learning about history by watching a great movie.
Overseas Travel: I've been fortunate to travel extensively. I've lived in the UK, Canada, Japan, and, of course, Australia. I've backpacked around Israel and Europe, and I've taken trips to Holland, the UK, Canada, the US, and to Japan many times. I recently returned from a trip to Korea this year.

Our new website has launched!
Over the last 9 months members of our Communications Committee have been working to modernise and streamline our communication pathways. This began with the introduction of our e-newsletter, followed by our new school app late last year that is a one stop shop for families to access all the day to day school information at their finger tips, and has now culminated in the launch of our brand new website.
Each of these 3 communication pathways are linked and speak to each other which provides you the user with a consistent, up to date and easy to navigate experience when wanting to connect with our school.
If you have not yet had a chance to explore our new website, you can head on over now by clicking below!
Welcome to Golden Grove High School Video
In term 1 our school worked with a videography and photography company to showcase our school's story, our community members and our values to our wider community. We have wonderful staff, students, learning programs and facilities and love how these videos have captured the beauty of our campus, the heart of the work we do and the people that make our school community so great.
Why not take a moment to sit back and enjoy watching!
Middle School Snapshot
We are proud to share the success of our recent events celebrating our exceptional Middle School students. During our Years 7, 8 and 9 celebration assemblies held over the first few weeks of this term we recognised and rewarded the hard work, dedication and commitment of our students during Term 1. It was truly inspiring to witness the growth and achievement of a record number of our young people, reinforcing our school values of pride, respect, equality, integrity and resilience. Following the assemblies we hosted a Middle School Celebration Morning Tea to honour and applaud the exceptional performance of students who received a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 7.4 or above. This morning tea was not only a time for recognition, but also provided a platform for our young people to share their academic experiences, exchange ideas, and foster a sense of camaraderie among high-achieving peers.
Year 7 Sammy D & Year 7 Camp
On Wednesday of Week 1, the Year 7 students had the chance to hear from Neil Davis, the father of Sam Davis and the founder of the Sammy D Foundation. Neil shared his emotional and powerful story about his son, who tragically lost his life at just 17 due to a one-punch attack.
Sam's story delivered a crucial message to the students about the devastating effects of senseless violence on families, friends, and loved ones. It emphasized the importance of looking out for each other, especially when emotions run high.
Following the presentation, the students participated in a workshop featuring various presenters, including Neil himself. The workshop covered topics such as harm, the impact and consequences of violence, the groups affected by violence, warning signs, and de-escalation strategies.
In Week 4, our Year 7 students enjoyed an overnight camp at Woodhouse Activity Centre. They participated in various outdoor activities, including laser tag, tube sliding, pioneering construction, Challenge Hill, and bouldering. The evening was highlighted by a campfire with marshmallows, where our peer leaders organized fun games.
We are incredibly proud of how our Year 7 students conducted themselves throughout the camp, consistently demonstrating our school values towards their peers, teachers, and instructors. This camp is one of the major events in our transition into high school program, and it was a tremendous success.
A big shout-out to all the staff who attended the camp and supported their Grove class. Your dedication and support are greatly appreciated!

Year 8 Doran Dollar PBL Encouragement System
Term 2 started with excitement amongst the year 8 cohort with students returning to see posters of their year level leader Andy Doran all over the hallway asking them if they had earned their 'Doran Dollar' today?
During the holidays, the year 8 team wanted to connect our PBL focus with a year level encouragement system to support and recognise students who demonstrate our school behaviour expectations. What we came up with was a new currency for our students that would showcase all the wonderful things they were doing in their classes everyday, encourage others to go above and beyond for their peers and bring focus to our PBL practices throughout the term. Supported by the year 8 teachers, students can earn Doran Dollars throughout the day in all their classes that they need to keep safe and bank until Friday when they can cash in with a very well dressed Mr Doran and hopefully be the winner with the most dollars earned to select a lunch of their choice from any food vendor at The Village Shopping Centre.
$1 can be earned by consistently demonstrating one or more of their teachers classroom expectations
$2 can be earned if they have gone above and beyond expectations in one of their classes
$5 can be earned if they demonstrate the current PBL focus for the school
Boy did the students show us just how capable they are! Each week hundreds of dollars are cashed in, and just last week we ran a 'Double Doran Dollar' Wednesday that alone had $162 dollars cashed in. Our winners this term have enjoyed a Friday lunch on us (picked up by Mr Doran in costume!) ranging from yiros', Zambreros and Subway.

Program ID
Program ID is an important part of the Year 10 curriculum and takes place on a Monday during lesson 3. In term 2 we will be covering some important information on career pathways and options at GGHS. Program ID is the platform where a lot of information goes out to students and so attendance to these lessons is just as important as any other lesson.

Weekly Quiz Ladder
Congratulations to 1006 which is Ms. Holden’s Grove. They took out the title of quiz champions and will be rewarded with a pizza party this term. It was a close call with only 4 points separating 1st and 3rd.
This term our Grove classes will go head-to-head in a series of minute to win it challenges and I will hopefully share some pictures in future editions of the newsletter.

PAFC – Power to end violence against women and empowered program
In weeks 1 and 2 our Year 10’s participated in the Power to End Violence Against Women & Empowered programs which are primary prevention programs developed to raise awareness around the issue of violence against women and promote respectful relationships to young men and women across schools in South Australia. We were lucky enough to have current and past players from both the men’s and women’s teams come out to speak with the students and touch on some important topics of conversation in this space. A small number of our students are planning to travel to Alberton Oval in week 3 for the follow up Leadership Day.

Year 10 Leadership Day - PAFC
On Thursday of week 3 we took 10 students down to Port Adelaide Football Club for the Leadership Day, which was a follow on to the program delivered @ GGHS in weeks 1 and 2. The sun was shining, and students were given the opportunity to meet AFL/AFLW players and tour the new facilities down at Alberton. Hopefully these young people can take away a few things they heard/learnt on the day and put it into action. Leadership is not about a badge, it's about 'doing' and activating change in the community. These young people all have the capacity to do this, and I was impressed with how they participated on the day.

Year 10 Achievement Assembly
On Friday of week 2 we held an achievement assembly for our Year 10 students. During this assembly we celebrated our high achievers, positive behaviour records, attendance to school and some sports awards. We also announced out Term 1 Quiz winner which was...1006 who just pipped 1009 and 1003 to the first-place prize. Thanks to our principal Mr. Kuss for helping to hand out the awards. Well done to all students who got recognised in the assembly, and we hope all students have a great term 2!
Positive Behaviour Records
Students can receive Positive Behaviour records from any staff member at the school and it has been great to read these and see some of the ‘good stuff’ that happens at our school. As of week 4 the students in Year 10 have received 82 PBR’s and this is the second highest amount in the school. The data from term 1 is below.

I would like to share some student names who have received PBR’s this term and look forward to seeing many more. Nishi Mann, Isabella Myers & Brydie Fraser have all received 3 PBR’s so far, well done.
Year 10 Work Experience
REMINDER that Work Experience is fast approaching and will take place in week 8. All students should have secured a placement for this week as no formal lessons will be offered at GGHS. There is still time for those students who still need to organise a placement, so please get onto this asap and seek support from a staff member at the school if required.
Senior School – High Achievers Morning Tea
Any opportunity to celebrate the ‘good stuff’ is always welcomed at Golden Grove High School. On Tuesday of week 3 we hosted a high achievers morning tea for our senior school students. These students achieved a high GPA in their Term 1 grades and by doing so have shown a commitment to their learning and achievement at Golden Grove High School. We congratulate these students and look forward to more of the same in Term 2.

As Term 1 came to an end, the Year 11 cohort at GGHS was feeling accomplished over their achievements in the first term of year 11. These successes were celebrated with a high achievers morning tea in week 3 and an awards assembly in week 4.
They fully embraced the Easter festivities with hunts and activities that brought a sense of community to the group.
Inside the classroom, they tackled weekly quizzes with gusto. Homegroup 1104 emerged triumphant, earning the privilege of hosting the first pizza party of the year.
Their positive behaviour and attitude extended beyond academics. They demonstrated genuine respect during ANZAC Day events and further presentations on university pathways and consent education.
As a collective group the year 11 students finished term 1 with a higher number of positive behaviour records than negative records, this showed the cohort is committed to being great students at GGHS.
Looking ahead, the Year 11 team plans to sustain this positive momentum with weekly lotteries for students who have achieved 100% attendance and raffles for students who have received positive behaviour records.

Faculty Focus
Year 8 Spanish
Last week all our Year 8 Spanish classes embarked on an enriching excursion to the Adelaide Zoo over three days. We were blessed with fantastic weather throughout, which enhanced the experience even further. Students engaged in a variety of activities, including map reading to find creatures from the Spanish-speaking world, and crafting descriptions of animals in Spanish. Additionally, a sustainability component was incorporated, allowing students to identify vulnerable animals and consider a variety of ways to assist them. Some were also able to pass through the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion on the way through the Botanic Gardens. Overall, it was a fantastic trip, and we cannot wait to run it again next year.

Professional Development
While students enjoyed an extra day of holidays at the start of this term, our teaching staff immersed themselves in a day of professional learning focussed on our Success for All Framework. On this day teachers were able to select two sessions: one on highly effective pedagogies in our classrooms, and one on creating conditions for thriving learners. Staff were also exposed to further training and development in the field of digital literacies the following week as we continue to build professional learning in to our weekly after-school meeting schedule. Teachers showed enthusiasm, passion and a dedication to life-long learning as we delved deeper in to evidence-based strategies designed to improve educational outcomes for all students as well as increase wellbeing and belonging at GGHS. We will continue to plan and implement what we have learnt during this term’s Collaborative Learning time on Monday afternoons.
Learning included:
- Metacognitive Strategies: Developing effective study habits
- Differentiation: Learning strategies to differentiate for students with ADHD
- Learner Agency: A journey in your own classroom
- Collaborative Learning: Shifting from developing to exemplary
- Questioning: The power of Socratic questioning in our classrooms
- Restorative Practices: Circles and building relational currency
- PBL: Classroom Intervention Support
- Notice and Inquire: Mental health in young people .
- Inclusion and Differentiation: How to effectively differentiate to meet the needs of all learners
- Cultural Awareness: Supporting staff to develop an understanding, awareness and respect for First Nations histories and cultures
How incredibly fortunate are we to have such highly competent teachers at our school able to expertly run such a wide range of professional learning opportunities!
Kirsty Ujhelyi
Assistant Principal for High Quality Teaching and Learning
Restorative Practices Workshops
Our journey with Kerrie Sellen from Restorative Journeys has continued this term with a range of student workshops and a community workshop. With Kerrie's dynamic presentation style and important messaging about the importance of connection, understanding our biological responses to our 9 affects and how we can use a restorative approach to strengthen our relationships and face the impacts when harm is caused, our community now has more tools to support our positive school culture and help our young people to develop into responsible and connected adults.
All of our year 7,8 & 9 students experienced Kerrie's workshop and learned how they can recognise their own responses and address mistakes when they happen in a way that maintains their relationships with others. The students were highly engaged and really enjoyed Kerrie's sense of humour. Hearing students return to their school day and use the language and tools Kerrie has given them was wonderful to see and confirmation that restorative approaches are impactful.
We were very happy to host some of our families, local community members and primary schools at Kerrie's community workshop, where the adults learned much like our students did. Having a community approach, where the same language is used with our young people will strengthen the connections between school and home.
We continue our learning journey with Kerrie with staff undertaking day 2 of in-depth training with Kerrie in week 7 and more student workshops to come later this year. If you would like to know more about Restorative Practices, or how we have embeded these practices in our school, please contact Sarah West here.

Discovery Centre
On Wednesday the 15th of May the DC headed to Roonka, Water Activity Centre outside of Blanchetown. We were excited for a few days of adventure under the sun and in the water. We arrived at camp and were welcomed by our camp guides and caterers. After finding our bunks and stowing our gear we split into two groups and started our adventure.
Over the course of our time at Roonka we participated in a range of individual challenge, teambuilding, educational and fun activities. These included low rope challenges, water relays, raft building, flying fox runs across a billabong, geocaching and more! We discovered strength and capabilities in ourselves and our supportive, collaborative, and caring sides during team challenges. For some of us this was our first time away on camp, at times we felt worried and a little lost but there were lots of friends who supported us and helped us really enjoy ourselves.
The 2024 DC Camp was a success and showed us what a wonderful group of people we all can be!

Sports
On Tuesday in Week 3, a number of girls in year 7 to 9 participated in a Netball Day Carnival at Argana Park. Golden Grove sent four teams to the Carnival. In a dazzling display of skill and teamwork, each team successfully displayed their talents at the netball carnival, with one team clinching the 1st place in their division.
Throughout the day, each team exhibited unwavering determination and unity, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship. It was amazing to see the girls gel together in what would have been their first, or one of very few times playing together. The courts sizzled with energy as our players showcased their prowess. Whether it was executing flawless passes, strategic plays, or delivering clutch performances, each team gave it their all on the day.
A massive congratulations must go to all students which participated in the carnival for the day. Well done girls!

House Update
Despite the winter weather coming in, the GGHS House Championship is heating up with points streaming in, especially for school sport participation recently.
The Championship Standings as of Week 5 Term 2 are:
1st MILNE HOUSE
2nd TILLEY
3rd ROBERTSON
4th STEVENS
These standings may change rapidly as Semester 1 draws to a close and points towards the Academic Shield are awarded. We encourage all students to finish strong in their assessments as not only will this provide a great sense of personal achievement, it also may contribute important points towards their house!
School Life
Japanese Study Tour
At the end of Term 1 we received our first Japanese Study Tour for 2024. Chuo University Junior High School spent a week at GGHS, their first organised visit to Adelaide.
Students were able to sample a range of classes, Aussie-style! From dance to disc-golf, cooking and Australian Rules football, our Chuo visitors also enjoyed their celebrity status as they moved around the school. GGHS students waved, chatted and generally made our guests very welcome.
Practising English in shared classes, with buddy students and home stay families, students also attended a Celebration dinner before a final day on excursion into the Adelaide Hills. They visited Hahndorf and Mount Lofty summit, with a much anticipated cuddle with a koala a highlight for many.
We look forward to welcoming Koishikawa JHS in August and encourage interested families to contact Charlotte Franz, ISP co-ordinator, about becoming a home stay family on this occasion.

Anzac Day Ceremony
The Golden Grove community gathered on Friday 3 May to remember and honour the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Prior to beginning our memorial, Mahayla and Kateisha delivered the Acknowledgement of Country.
Tovie and Gabbie then addressed the staff and students covering the history of Anzac Day and spoke about the gruelling conditions faced at ANZAC Cove. In particular, the lack of water and disease-prone environment. This was a factor that led to the campaign being unsuccessful and the deaths of over 6,000 Australians. Following the end of World War One, the 25 April became a day of commemoration for the sixty thousand Australians who died during the First World War, and later became a day to mourn those who died in all wars. Now, over one hundred years after the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli, we commemorate the day to acknowledge the great sacrifice of the Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives to protect our country.
Thank you Tovie and Gabbie for your informative talk about Anzac Day.
We then continued with the poem, Sonnet for ANZAC DAY, followed by the Ode of Remembrance, read by Jacinta and Kayleigh.
Sound the Last Post again, lest we forget
the freedom that we cherish has been bought -
not found like mushrooms in the field; the debt
is ours to pay, mindful of those who fought
and fell - yet still they held the torch aloft!
May we remain as zealous to withstand
the traitors who would make our fibres soft,
as well as enemies beyond the land.
The trumpet has the power to move us still,
and though the debris of a flood of years
lies over hand and mind, an aching thrill
comes rising perilously close to tears.
The memorial service was one of honour and pride through the student’s involvement, and the Golden Grove High School community which showed outstanding respect for the Anzac’s.
