2009 saw the inaugural Year 9 Special Focus Netball Class at Golden Grove High School. It was developed due to the growing popularity of the sport in the local community.

In 2017 the program has been extended to a combined Year 10/11 Stage 1 course as well.

Both courses involve an intensive 14 week Netball program during practical lessons with a modified Physical Education program taking place in the remaining 5 weeks of the semester. The theory component of the course will contain Australian Curriculum and SACE required content.

Whilst completing the Netball section of the course, the class participates in developmental sessions to improve their skills and knowledge of the game. Fitness is also an important focus. Year 9 focus is on Junior Developmental Skills, Year 10/11 focus is on Intermediate Developmental Skills.

All participants in the YEAR 9 course will also complete the “Three” umpiring course run by Netball SA and are encouraged to go on to the Level 1 umpiring course. Through this experience we encourage all students to become actively involved in umpiring in the community and through the school sport program at Golden Grove High School.

All participants in the STAGE 1 YEAR 10/11 program will be involved in an umpiring update course and will be encouraged to complete a Foundation Coaching Course through Netball SA. Students will be encouraged to involve themselves in community and school sports programs in both umpiring and coaching.

The class of 18 - 22 students is selected in the following way:

Year 9:

Year 8 Girls are asked to nominate to trial early in Term 3.

These trials are held during Term 3 and the chosen students will be sent an acceptance letter.

Stage One - Year 10/11:

Students from the previous Year 9 and Stage 1 courses (Year 10’s only) will be invited to complete the Stage 1 course via a letter in Term 3 of the previous year.

These courses also lead to possible involvement in the following competitions:

  • All students: one day Year 8/9 & Senior Vista Carnival in Term 2.
  • Year 10/11 students: umpiring and coaching of junior students (across Year 10 and 11).
  • Vista Competition on Tuesday afternoons: Year 9 - Term 2, Year 10/11 - Term 3
  • Knockout State-Wide Competition for both Year 9’s and 10/11’s taking place across Term 2 and 3.
