This year we have entered four Year 8/9 teams and one Year 10 team in the interschool debating competition run by the SA Debating Association. On the evening of Tuesday 13th May, 19 students attended Loreto College at Marryatville to take part in this year’s first round of competition, winning four debates out of five.

The Golden Grove l team – Philippa, Lily and captain Leah – convinced their adjudicator “that smoking should not be banned in public places”, defeating St Peter’s College. Many thanks go to their coach, Mrs Horvat, and their timekeeper, Lachlan.

The Golden Grove ll team – Captain Emma, Tahlia – also convinced their adjudicator “that smoking should not be banned in public places”, defeating St Peter’s College. Many thanks go to their coach, Ms Muscardin, and their timekeeper, Anna.

The Golden Grove lll team – Amber, Keelan and Captain Brayden – convinced their adjudicator “that smoking should be banned in public places”, defeating St Peters Girls’ School. Many thanks go to their coach, Mr Fitzgerald, and their chairperson, Ojus.

The Golden Grove lV team – Kirstyn, Captain Brianna and Alicia – also tried to convince their adjudicator “that smoking should be banned in public places”, but they were beaten by the narrowest of margins (1 point) by St Peters Girls’ School. (Coach: Mrs Lyons)

Our Year 10 team – Thai, Captain Sam and Alexander – convinced their adjudicator “That the government should not rescue struggling businesses”, defeating Norwood Morialta High School. Thanks go to their chairperson, Tylor. (Coach: Mrs Lyons)

Our students wish to thank their parents for providing their transport to Loreto, and their parents, siblings and grandparents for being such a supportive audience. We will miss the invaluable help of Mrs Horvat, who is retiring from coaching (for now).
